Female "Odd Couple" Launches Brough Group's New Drama Season
Brough's Petuaria Players re-visit Neil Simon’s comedy, Odd Couple, as their curtain-raiser to the 2018/19 season in the East Yorkshire village.
The Odd Couple is a classic of stage, cinema and TV. A story about two mismatched roommates, it premiered on Broadway in 1965 and was made into a film in 1968 with Jack Lemmon as Felix Ungar and Walter Matthau as Oscar Madison. A popular TV series followed in the 70s starting Tony Randall and Jack Klugman.
Less well known, however, is that Simon wrote an alternative version in 1985 for a female cast. Essentially it is the same storyline where Felix becomes Florence and Oscar becomes Olive and their poker friends become Trivial Pursuits enthusiasts. The Pidgeon sisters upstairs become the Costazuela brothers.
Olive in her messy, ill-equipped apartment is hosting a weekly Trivial Pursuits game with Vera, Mickey, Sylvie and Renee, when they start to wonder where their prim and proper friend Florence is. They soon find out that she and her husband have split up.
The Players first performed this production 12 years ago.
