Hull Independent Cinema Announces New Line-up

A new season of independent film has been announced for Hull for April to June 2018. Taking place at Vue Cinema at Princes Quay and Hull Truck Theatre, it includes the very best award-winning and critically-acclaimed new films from around the world, giving audiences in the city the chance to discover something different.

The programme, by Hull Independent Cinema, opens on Tuesday 3 April at Vue Cinema Hull Princes Quay with Journey’s End, set in a British trench in 1918. The film explores the story of a group of officers awaiting an imminent attack and how they deal with their impending fate. Based on R C Sherriff’s 1920s play, this British film is a thoughtful and emotional look at the banality of war, and was requested by many regular members of the HIC audience.

Foreign language gems include Loveless, a hard-hitting Russian drama from the director of Leviathan; Sebastián Lelio’s moving transgender tale A Fantastic Woman (pictured), winner of the Best Foreign Language Oscar; a star-studded cast in Palme D’Or winner The Square; François Ozon’s mysterious romance L’Amant Double; and sumptuous Japanese animation Mary and the Witch’s Flower.

The very best of English-language film is represented by titles such as You Were Never Really Here, the hugely-anticipated new film from Lynne Ramsey telling the story of a traumatised war veteran; American coming-of-age tales from Cory Finlay and Todd Haynes in Thoroughbreds and Wonderstruck; and British dramas Beast and Lean on Pete. Documentary and fashion lovers are catered for with a screening of Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist, telling the story of punk rock’s Grande Dame Vivienne Westwood.

Beyond the weekly programme of film, HIC will also be hosting the welcome return of music documentary festival Doc’n Roll Film Festival in early May with five days of film screenings and live music, and the return of the ever-popular Yorkshire Silents with a mini-season of three fantastic silent films with live music accompaniment at the end of May.
