Black British civil rights movement explored at Hull Truck

March 3, 2019

Princess & The Hustler, an inspiring play co-produced with Eclipse Theatre Company and Bristol Old Vic, is the main March offering at Hull Truck Theatre.

Princess & The Hustler is set against the backdrop of one of the most pivotal moments of the Black British civil rights movement – the 1963 Bristol bus boycott, and tells the story of Princess, a cheeky 10-year-old with a plan to win the Weston-Super-Mare Beauty Contest. Whilst Princess explores what it really means to be black and beautiful, her brother, a budding photographer, represents the beginning of an incredibly important moment in the documentation of Black British culture.

The production is the second national tour born from Revolution Mix – an Eclipse movement that is spearheading the largest ever delivery of new black British stories. The first Revolution Mix story was last year’s sell-out production of Black Men Walking.

Written by Bristol-based Chinonyerem Odimba, Princess & The Hustler, which was shortlisted for the Alfred Fagon Award, is directed by Eclipse Theatre’s artistic director Dawn Walton.

The cast includes Kudzai Sitima, Romayne Andrews, Donna Berlin, Emily Burnett, Seun Shote, Fode Simbo, and Jade Yourell.

Mark Babych, Artistic Director at Hull Truck Theatre, said: “We are thrilled to be co-producing Princess & The Hustler and to share this important Black British story on our stage. Set against the background of the 1963 Bristol bus boycott, this terrific new play resonates loudly with present-day Britain. We are proud to collaborate with Eclipse Theatre to turn on the spotlight on this important moment in the documentation of Black British Culture.”

The production will run at Hull Truck Theatre from Tuesday 5 until Saturday 16 March.

Ticket prices range from £10 to £24.50.
