Shipyard play - part of Stage4Beverley line-up

January 20, 2019

New drama, renowned comedy and musicians all come together this February for a winter musical festival in East Yorkshire.

The Stage4Beverley Festival at East Riding Theatre runs from Wednesday 13th to Sunday 17th February, and includes the play, Broadside On, written by Beverley playwright and actor, Gordon Meredith, about the town’s former shipyard. He’s joined by his son Josh in the production, plus a percussive musical score by Wai Wan for the show inspired by industrial sounds of the shipyard, using recordings taken from various places including on board the Hull trawler, the Arctic Corsair. This performance is at 12 noon on Saturday 16th February. Watch Gordon talk about the play to Tony Barker:

The Festival also includes comedian, poet and musician, John Hegley, virtuoso jazz flamenco guitarist Eduardo Niegla, and the funk-fuelled repertoire of Tankus the Henge, with music ranging from New Orleans-inspired swing to heavy rock riffs.

Leading young musicians and singers from the region and beyond will be performing, including Katie Spencer, Hannah Sanders and Ben Savage, as well as a concert dedicated to the rising stars of the future – The Horizon Stage, hosted by local musician Sam Pirt of the duo, the Hut People.

There is also the chance to have a go in a harmony workshop led by Beverley Communty Choir leader, Sue Murray, and an informal music session led by members of the White Horse Folk Club.
